
Charlie Shamieh is AIG Senior Vice President and Corporate Chief Actuary, reporting to David Herzog, AIG Chief Financial Officer. As Global Head of the Actuarial and Value Management team, Mr. Shamieh oversees AIG's rating agency relations, regulatory and rating agency capital management efforts, value management initiatives, and is leading the creation of an integrated corporate actuarial function comprising the actuarial divisions of AIG, Chartis, SAFG, and UGC.
Mr. Shamieh began his career at AIG in 2007, where he served AIG's Deputy Chief Risk Officer, focusing on AIG's insurance business segments. During this time, he developed a capital management framework that is now used to assess AIG's parental liquidity needs, and created a strategic risk appetite framework for use by each of AIG's core insurance businesses and the AIG Group Risk Committee.
Prior to AIG, Mr. Shamieh served as the Chief Risk Officer of Munich Re Group and founded the company's Integrated Risk Management (IRM) division. He was also appointed as a permanent member of Munich Re Group's Committee of the Board of Management and was also a permanent member of each of the company's Board Risk Committees. During his tenure, Standard & Poor's upgraded the Munich Re Group's financial strength rating from A+/Positive to AA-/Stable, citing Munich Re's strong enterprise risk management as “a major driver” behind the upgrade.
From 2005 to 2007, Mr. Shamieh served as a non-executive director of Barrie & Hibbert Limited, the UK financial services and asset liability management consulting firm, during which time he assisted in selling a minority stake of the firm to Goldman Sachs & Co.
Mr. Shamieh began his career in 1986 with AMP in Australia as an Executive Officer specializing in group insurance products and pensions consulting. In 1994, he joined Mercer , Australia 's largest actuarial consulting firm, as a Principal in the Asset and Pensions Consulting division as well as in the Risk, Finance and Insurance division. Thereafter, he joined Trowbridge Consulting, which merged with Deloitte in 2000, and became a Partner advising the energy and utilities sectors on financial risk management. In 2001, Mr. Shamieh joined the firm of Oliver, Wyman & Company, where he advised leading insurers in Europe .
An Australian national, Mr. Shamieh was awarded “Insurance Company Risk Manager of the Year” by Insurance Day magazine in December 2005. He holds a Bachelor of Economics degree from Macquarie University in New South Wales , Australia ; and is a Fellow of The Institute of Actuaries of Australia and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries.
